model of impact
Our Steps Clubfoot Care model of impact has four pillars of support:
- Training of healthcare workers
- Clubfoot clinic support
- Advocacy
- Clubfoot Braces
As part of our Clinic Support, we train clubfoot clinic coordinators on parent education and set up and management of patient stats, supplies parent education leaflets and posters, training models, and sources and supplies clubfoot braces. In 2020 Steps developed a Clinic Coordinator Toolkit which consists of a Clinic Coordinator Training Handbook and all the processes and templates required to support the smooth running of a clubfoot clinic.
Monitoring and evaluation
Steps visits clinic partners to discuss progress, help with challenges, and determine needs and outcomes.
Steps assists clubfoot clinics with tools to enter clubfoot treatment data for research and planning. This confidential data is for clinic use only, in compliance with the South African POPIA act. Steps only uses anonymised numbers to monitor our support programme’s impact and progress.
Steps does weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports of numbers of: Patients treated, Providers trained, Clinics supported, Clinic visits, Educational Materials and other Support Materials and supplied.

Steps advises on setting up a Ponseti clubfoot clinic. Contact us for information on the STEPS clubfoot clinic model.
Clinic partnerships
In January 2013, Steps launched a regional Ponseti clinic support programme in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The Botswana and Namibia programmes were taken over by their Ministries of Healht in 2017. The Steps clubfoot care programme supports 38 clinics in the South African state health sector. We also support private health practitioners with sourcing clubfoot braces for their patients that have health insurance. Steps also provided monitoring and evaluation support for the Bugando Clubfoot Project, and consulted on the start-up of a national Tanzanian clubfoot care programme.
National programmes
Steps works with local clubfoot champions, doctors, clinics and government to set up national clubfoot programmes. We collaborate on capacity planning, community awareness and clinic set-up models. We advise on treatment guidelines and programme implementation.
